    The Launch of OPEDucate

    The Launch of OPEDucate

Empowering the O&P Industry Through Digital Learning Platforms

In February 2024, OPED Australia (incorporating OPC Health and oapl Clinical Services) launched a new Learning Management System (LMS) called OPEDucate, a platform designed to enhance the professional growth of prosthetists, orthotists, and technicians across the country. While LMS platforms are familiar to many, whether through compliance or occupational health and safety training, OPEDucate represents an exciting opportunity tailored specifically for the O&P industry. It aims to address many of the challenges the field is facing today by providing clinicians and technicians with access to high-quality learning and development resources.

    Addressing Industry Challenges

In The Review’s previous publication from the Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association (AOPA), several key challenges affecting the O&P profession were identified through the member survey. These include maintaining up-to-date clinical and technical skills, staff retention, and the increasing difficulty in meeting resource requirements, particularly in regional areas. The use of an LMS can help to address many of these concerns by offering staff the ability to learn anytime and anywhere, breaking down the barriers posed by geography, time constraints, and financial pressure.

One of the most significant challenges the industry faces is knowledge transfer. The gap between retiring and incoming clinicians continues to widen, and with it, the risk of losing critical knowledge and experience. In many workplaces, when a clinician leaves, they take years of specialised knowledge with them, leaving behind a void that can be difficult to fill. Learning Management Systems with both ready-made and tailor-made content can be designed to mitigate this issue by developing, distributing and housing training materials that preserve the expertise of seasoned clinicians. This creates a space where knowledge can be passed down to the next generation, ensuring the O&P profession continues to evolve and improve.

    Retaining and Developing Staff

Career progression and professional development are increasingly important for O&P clinicians, particularly for emerging leaders. As with any profession, the desire for growth and the opportunity to take on new roles often influences employment decisions. An LMS like OPEDucate not only supports the practical skill development of clinicians but also focuses on personal growth areas such as leadership, mental health, and overall well-being.

By providing targeted professional development resources, OPEDucate aims to retain top talent within the industry. In the past, a lack of internal development and progression opportunities may have driven clinicians to seek employment elsewhere. Now, with tools like an LMS, OPED Australia is investing in its people, ensuring they have the resources they need to excel in their careers and take on new roles.

A Hub for Learning in O&P

Education in the O&P space has become a central focus in recent years, with many organisations recognising the value of continuous professional development. Platforms such as the Fillauer Learning Academy, Thuasne Academy to name a few, have emerged to meet this growing demand for accessible and flexible learning opportunities. OPEDucate embraces this trend by creating a centralised location where clinicians can access relevant training from recognised and accredited, OPC Health suppliers, along with content developed in-house. OPEDucate’s approach is to allow clinicians to streamline their learning experience, making education more efficient and accessible than before.

In March 2025, OPEDucate.com.au was launched and many of these resources that were initially made for OPED Australia staff are now available to all O&P clinicians across the country. This initiative will further contribute to the professional growth of the entire O&P community, ensuring that education and development opportunities are available to everyone, regardless of their location or affiliation.

    Looking to the Future

As the O&P industry continues to evolve, it's essential that we keep pace with the demands of the profession and the needs of its clinicians. Company LMS’s represent a significant step forward in addressing these challenges, but it's just the beginning. By focusing on the development of emerging leaders, retaining talented staff, and creating a space where knowledge can be shared and preserved, OPED Australia is investing in the future of the O&P profession.

With platforms like OPEDucate, the goal is that the workforce continues to develop on their existing knowledge and that the next generation of clinicians will be better equipped to meet the demands of their profession, providing improved outcomes for their patients and enhance the reputation and professionalism of the O&P industry.
